a little schizophrenic

This movie has the heart and modesty typical of Canadian cinema, often applauded and revered.

However, I found the grand romantic storyline almost taken directly from the epic Hollywood genre (Pearl Harbour).

This dichotomy left me feeling a little wanting. I had almost hoped Paul Gross had taken a bolder step turning this into an epic story, further expanding on the extraordinary efforts of those Canadian Soldiers.

I have heard a lot of negative comments about this film- still I am a history buff and I wanted to see it. I was VERY impressed- Paul Gross has done an amazing job - well acted, well directed, well written, and the cinematography was breathtaking. YES I would have changed a few things: notably the secondary love story which did not ring true (the younger couple seemed a tad too modern)and I would have tightened up the Calgary aspect of the story, with more weight given to the events leading up to the battle.
BUT these are small points. I felt the love story between Michael Dunn and the Nurse was very heartfelt and necessary. There has to be a human connection between the audience and the characters, or we will not empathize when they are in peril.
I also felt I was right in the midst of the battle. It must have been horrific. It made me VERY proud to be Canadian.
I am keeping my thumbs up for an Oscar nomination (Best Foreign Film) for this fabulous achievement.
Paul Gross is a man of MANY talents. Kudos for him for staying in Canada! We are the better for it!

Women will love this movie..

After viewing this movie with my wife, and expecting to see Canada's involvement in WWI and witness the sacrifice and dedication of our soldiers, I was very disappointed to find out that it was not a movie about the battle. This was a love story about a soldier and a nurse, and the majority of the movie it takes place in Alberta!

It was a carefully created set of previews that make this movie seem like something it's not.

It does nothing to make me feel patriotic, but instead makes me feel like a fool for getting sucked into another story like Pearl Harbour.

Simply the Best

This movie amazing, it had a flawless storyline, perfect sets and great acting, If you were to take 100 pictures of Passendaele, the set of the movie would just look like that. The acting was amazing and the battle scenes were like as if you were sitting in a muddy foxhole with the soldiers.
If you only see one movie a year make it this one

Excellent Movie

Passchendaele is a very well done movie. The story was well done as it moved flawless from the home front to the battle field. The only bad I can say about the movie is that it should have been a little longer, just to tell more on the history of the battle of Passchendaele. If the movie added another 30 minutes, the movie would have been complete (could have been another "Titanic Movie").

This is absolutely the best war movie I have seen. It's much more gritty than slick US productions and that makes it all the more dramatic.

The battle scenes were so realistic that I felt shell shock just watching it. Everyone left the theatre in a very sombre mood after the credits were mostly finished. Yes, there are a few scenes that were less than stellar but there was not a single moment where the movie did not have your undivided attention.

It made me proud to be a Canadian and proud of what my father & grandfathers have fought for.

Well done Paul Gross!!
